From California jazz to Chahargah in Tehran: the extraordinary musical and emotional journey of American musician and ethnomusicologist Lloyd Miller.
Miller first travelled reluctantly to Iran in 1957, aged nineteen. Hearing the Persian tar in Tehran transformed his musical direction and began a lifelong relationship with Iranian music and culture.
Built from my original reporting and conversations with Miller and his wife, the film follows his study of santur under Dariush Safvat, seven years in Iran on a Fulbright scholarship, and his work uniting jazz with Persian music on stage, in print and on national television.
Though he later lived in Utah, Iran remained his spiritual and artistic home.
